How to Play Fortnite Creative 2.0: Mastering This Update

Fortnite’s update, the Unreal Editor for Fortnite, or what everyone’s calling Creative 2.0, has totally changed what we can do in the game.

You can build our own unique islands using tons of Fortnite assets. This new version is a huge step up, giving us more control and options to personalize our spaces.

And there’s this new programming language, Verse, that lets us create stuff in Fortnite we couldn’t even think of before.

For anyone eager to play on Fortnite’s updated creative scene, there’s plenty of help out there and here.

Steps to Engage with Fortnite Creative 2.0

To start exploring the vast possibilities of Fortnite Creative 2.0, you first need to get your hands on the Unreal Editor designed specifically for Fortnite. Lucky for us, it’s free and getting it is pretty straightforward:

  1. Open the Epic Games Launcher on your computer.
  2. Head over to the Epic Games Store and search for “Unreal Editor For Fortnite”.
  3. Click on the “Get” button next to the app’s listing.
  4. Confirm the download, which will show as costing $0.00.
  5. Wait for the download to finish.

If the download seems to be stuck, just go to your library in the launcher and start the installation for the Unreal Editor For Fortnite from there.

Engaging with Fortnite Creative 2.0

To get started with Fortnite Creative 2.0, just open up your Epic Games Launcher. You can find the Unreal Editor for Fortnite in your library or under the Quick Launch area.

Once you’ve got the Unreal Editor running, you’ll see a prompt that suggests checking out some forums hosted by the Epic Games Developer Community. These discussions are super helpful for anyone new to Creative 2.0, offering a solid introduction.

I’d recommend beginning with the Initial Steps Guide in the official documentation for the Unreal Editor for Fortnite. It walks you through the creation basics on this platform, step by step.

Crafting Your Island

Starting out in Fortnite Creative 2.0 means setting up a new project. First, head over to the Project Browser where you’ll see a bunch of initial templates to choose from. These range from a simple blank slate to several pre-made empty islands.

Pick the template that suits your vision, then decide where you want to save your project and what you want to name it. This gets your creation process rolling. If you’re just messing around with the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) for the first time, you might want to leave the Unreal Revision Control turned off.

And don’t forget to save your work. Just go to File -> Save All, and you’ll make sure not to lose any of your progress.

UEFN Movement

In UEFN, you can change how fast the camera moves around in your space.

Just look for the camera icon, which you’ll find in the upper right corner of the viewport, right next to the Outliner panel.

There’s a slider there that lets you adjust the speed.

Slide it down if you want to move more slowly and carefully, or push it up to zip across bigger areas more quickly.

Establishing a Quick Reference Point

To move around your project more easily in UEFN, it’s smart to use ‘Bookmarks’ to quickly jump back to certain spots. Here’s how to set one up:

  • First, click on the “triple line” icon at the top left, near where it says Perspective.
  • Then, head to the Bookmarks section.
  • Choose ‘Set Bookmark’ from the options there.
  • Pick a slot between 0 and 9 to save your location.

You can also use a handy shortcut to set these Bookmarks faster. Just press ‘CTRL’ plus any number from 1 to 9, and you’ll mark that spot in your project right away.

How to Edit Assets and Fabs in UEFN

To work with your project’s elements in UEFN, you’ll use the Outliner panel, where every asset you’re working with is listed.

If you’re looking to add Fabs quickly to your project, there’s a handy feature at the top left of your screen for that.

It’s designed for easy drag-and-drop, so you can pull Fabs right into your island or place things like lights or shapes exactly where you need them.

If you need to get a closer look at a particular Fab or asset, just click on it with your left mouse button (LMB) and press ‘F’. This will center your camera on that item, making it easier to work on.

And if you want to check it out from different angles, hold down the ALT key and use the LMB to move your mouse around.

This method gives you a full, detailed view and helps with adjusting your assets just right.

Viewing Maps in UEFN Beside Fortnite Creative

To edit an island in real-time, initiate a “Launch Session” in UEFN, which opens the island within Fortnite’s own environment for hands-on adjustments.

For simultaneous views of UEFN and Fortnite Creative 2.0:

  • Set both applications to Windowed mode.
  • Resize UEFN to occupy half the computer screen.
  • Adjust Fortnite’s display via:
    • Go to Settings
    • Select Window Mode
    • Choose Windowed
    • Set Resolution to 1280×720 16:9

One can see UEFN and Fortnite side by side this way, easing the process of comparing and refining without the need for a multiple monitor setup.
